Bhubaneswar, Jul 28:
A special team of Commissionerate Police arrested Rajendra Barik alias Raju, the absconding prime accused in the sensational Dillip Nayak murder case near Patrapada on the outskirts of Odisha’s capital city on June 18, late on Monday night.
Talking to newsmen, Twin City Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr RP Sharma said a special team comprising of Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Khandagiri police station Sarat Kumar Sahu, IIC Tamando police station Kishore Chandra Mund and led by Zone-III ACP Pratap Kumar Swain conducted a surprise raid on a relative’s house of Barik in Khandapada of Nayagarh district late on Monday night and arrested him from the backyard of the house.
“After committing crime on June 18, Barik had fled to Raghunath Nagar in Dumduma area in the capital city on a bike. From there, he hired an auto-rickshaw for Rs 600 to Puri while he stayed at Sterling Holidays Golden Sands Hotel located along the sea beach. To escape arrest, he changed his looks by shaving his beard and hair”, Sharma said.
Dr Sharma also said, the accused, during interrogation, told the police that since the day of the crime, had moved several places like Konark, Delanga, Kanas, Satapada, Brahmagiri to seek his hideouts. During his stay in these places, he used to sleep in auto-rickshaws in the night and had changed 3-4 mobile phones and 6-7 SIM cards to dodge the police from tracking his hideout.
Barik had moved to his aunt’s house in Khandapada six days ago after police got close to him in Puri. He had taken Rs 60,000 cash with him to take care of his expenses during his stay in these places, the police commissioner said, adding that the police have seized two mobile phones, three SIM cards, one revolver and two round of live bullets from his possession.
“Barik will be forwarded to a local court here later in the day. We will take him on remand for further interrogation . Investigation is still on to nab other 22 accused involved in the case,” he added.
Prior to the press briefing of Sharma, the arrest of Raju was confirmed by Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Satyabrata Bhoi.
The Commissionerate Police had formed a special investigation team on July 20 to arrest Barik for which it had approached the SDJM court on July 16 seeking a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against him and his other associates.
The court is yet to rule on the petition filed by the Commissionerate Police.
A singer-turned politician, Raju later began his profession as a contract mafia. The police were in hunt for him since the day of the crime. Prior to his arrest, police had arrested three persons, including Raju’s elder brother Jaya Barik, in the murder case.
It may be noted that the 35-year-old contractor Dillip Nayak was shot dead by rival Raju’s group near a construction site behind the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Patrapada under Khandagiri police station on June 18.
Hundreds of protesters, including the family members and the associates of deceased Dileep, had protested outside the Khandagiri police station on June 29 demanding the arrest of Raju.
