Malkangiri, Aug 14:

BSF jawans and police personnel on a combing operation had a providential escape as a pressure bomb planted by Maoists went off moments after they passed by a road in Odisha’s Malkangiri district today, sources said.

The blast took place at Telrai chowk near the Kalimela-Motu main road.

The explosion created a crater at the site.

The pressure bomb was activated when a stone came rolling from a hill due to heavy rains. Small particles of the explosive material have been collected by the BDF jawans for examination.

According to the police, the joint team of BSF personnel and the police were on a combing operation in the area in view of Maoists’ call to observe the Independence Day as ‘Black Flag Day’. The ultras had planted the pressure bomb in anticipation of the combing exercise in the area.

Following the incident, the BSF personnel have intensified combing operation, reports said.

Talking to the media, south-western IG Yashwant Jethwa said , the SPs of all south Odisha districts have been asked to stay on high alert in view of the call for Black Flag Day by the Maoists and to make sure no untoward incident takes place during the Independence Day celebrations.

“Elaborate security arrangements have been made at all important spots in the district headquarters”, he added.
