Malkangiri, Dec 29:
A pregnant woman of Bonda tribe has been admitted to the district hospital in Malkangiri, Odisha in serious condition after she was branded with hot iron rods as a cure for abdominal pain.
The tribal woman belonging to Chandaghati area under Khairput block in Malkangiri district was allegedly branded by hot iron rods after she complained of stomach pain.
Her husband took her to a quack who used hot iron rods to brand her stomach in an attempt to relieve her of pain. This only aggravated her health condition and he admitted her to Khairput health centre.
“ I had taken her to a traditional healer who branded her with iron and loaded the bricks on her stomach. She complained of severe pain after that and I took her to Khairput health centre, but as her condition worsened we were asked to go to district headquarters hospital”, her husband said.
The woman had been admitted one month ago to the district hospital with the same complaint and had gone home after her stomach ache had been cured, Dr Sapand Dinda, a doctor at the hospital said.
Recently, a quack was arrested in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district for allegedly branding a 28-day baby with hot iron nails to treat him for his abdominal pain.
