Bhubaneswar, Jul 8:
After a few months of silence, student factions have faced off again in Odisha’s Utkal University due to a controversy surrounding admission of a commerce student.
The scheduled admission process of commerce department and the PG council meeting have been postponed till tomorrow due to the brewing tension.
As per sources, one of the factions had been opposing admission of a student named Pruthviraj Dalbehera, But the admission committee decided in favour of admitting him as per a decision taken in a meeting. Surprisingly, the decision was reversed within 24 hours citing the need for advice from lawyers.
While the decision to not follow the resolution of the admission committee brings the role of the university authorities into question, student groups are blaming it on political pressure. It has also aggravated the tension between the groups and the situation remains volatile.
Cops have been deployed at all gates of the university and identity card and baggage are being checked to deny entry to non-students.
It may be noted that the University authorities planned to start the session early this year and had finished the entrance tests a month earlier than usual. The classes were scheduled to start from July 1. The leaves of professors were also cancelled. However, the admission process is yet to get over for six departments. Even though the admission was supposed to be completed by yesterday for some departments, it has been postponed due to the tension in the university.
