As many as 30 school children from three schools under Kalimela block in Odisha’s Malkangiri district were reported ill after taking deworming medicine administered at their schools on Wednesday.

They were admitted to Kalimela Community Health Centre.

According to reports, Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) and Anganwadi workers had distributed deworming medicines to children at different schools in the block.

During the drive, more than 100 students of MPV-36 PUPS School were given albendazole medicine–an anti-worm medication–after mid-day meal.

All of them fell ill after few moments of consuming the medicine as they complained of vomiting accompanied with pain in the abdomen. Later, some of them were admitted to the Kalimela CHC.

Similarly, fifth class student Soni Majhi of Tentuliguda Primary School under Gamphakonda Panchayat and an eighth class student of Vivekananda Vidyapeeth at MV-72 were admitted to the same hospital in a critical condition after taking the deworming medicine.

The students were recovering after receiving treatment, the health centre informed.
