Jajpur/Bargarh: A farmer of Sundarpur village under Bari block in Odisha’s Jajpur district has allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree.
According to local villagers, the deceased identified as Suresh Kumar Sahu (49) had taken hand loans from fellow villagers and cultivated paddy on 12 acres of land.
Suresh was frustrated and had lost his mental balance as his crops suffered extensive damage due to drought, then it was pest attack and finally, due to unseasonal rain, the villagers said.
Late on Monday night Suresh had climbed a sacred fig tree (peepul) near his farmland and had committed suicide by hanging himself to death, they added.
On being informed, police reached the spot today and are investigating the matter.
Meanwhile, another farmer of Raisilpadar village under Gaisilet block in Bargarh district succumbed to his alleged suicide attempt today.
According to his family members, the deceased farmer identified as Umakanta Sahu had consumed poison on Monday allegedly after suffering crop loss.
Umakanta was rushed to the nearby Government Hospital at Loisingha by his family members.
He succumbed while undergoing treatment today.
