The deceased has been identified as Ratani Pradhan. Her husband Anam Pradhan also sustained bullet injuries in the attack and was hospitalised.

As per a complaint filed by the woman’s brother-in-law at Thakurgarh Police Station, one Rabindra Bhoi of the village verbally abused the couple over a petty issue. A heated exchange of words erupted between the two following which Rabindra opened fire three rounds of bullet from a country-made pistol targeting Anam.

In the meantime, Ratani was struck with a bullet while she was trying to save her husband from the firing.

While the woman died on the spot, Anam sustained bullet injuries on his right leg and was rushed to the Angul District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for treatment. He was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as his condition deteriorated. His condition is stated to be critical.

Police have seized the body for post-mortem and started investigation into the incident after registering a case. The accused absconded after committing the act.
