Odisha: Over 10 obscene videos go viral in seven months

Bhubaneswar: The police advisory to check circulation of obscene videos on the internet appeared to have failed as more than 10 videos with obscene content have gone viral in the past seven months so far this year in Odisha.

The trend of making the obscene videos viral on social media poses as a big challenge for the police. Not only the college teens or rural girls, persons in entertainment and other industries were not spared to be victim in the modern society.

According to reports, more than 10 obscene videos of women including an actress, a singer and six college girls have gone viral on social media in the past seven years starting from January till date during the year 2018.

While Commissionerate police have arrested accused taking the suo motu control over the matter, arrests have been made after receiving the complaints from the victims.

The accused are at large in four cases so far.

Reacting to the issue, Bhubaneswar DCP Anup Sahoo said that social media like WhatsApp need to impose restriction on the users to stop them from making obscene videos viral.

Police have issued advisory to check circulation of obscene videos on the internet and in some cases the accused have been arrested. However, people need to be aware of such things, he added.

Here is the list of obscene videos that went viral this year so far:

January 31: Sahid Nagar police arrested an accused identified as Sushil Kumar Panda from Bari area in Jajpur district on January 31 for posting nude photos of a young woman on Facebook. He confessed to the crime before police stating that he circulated the photos after being ditched by the woman.

April 15: An accused identified as Nishikant Kar, a native of Gop area in Puri district, was arrested following the complaint for threatening to make the videos featuring intimate scenes of a girl student with him in Bhubaneswar. The Sahid Nagar police seized few videos from his mobile phone.

April 17: A video of a television soap actress featuring her intimate moments had become viral social media.

April 19: Nayapalli police arrested a person identified as Saroj Das from Salia Sahi area for allegedly making his girlfriend’s nude photos viral on WhatsApp.

April 20: A well-known singer’s intimate video was doing the rounds on the internet. The 1.22 minute video clip featuring her intimate moments with a person is still being circulated through mobile.

June 11: Sahid Nagar police arrested a person identified as Surjyakant Parida of Unit 9 area on charges of threatening girlfriend to make her video with him viral on social media. He is accused of having physical relationship with the girl on the pretext of marriage.

July 2: A youth identified as Sushant Kumar Behera was arrested from Sriripur area in Bhubaneswar for making a video featuring some intimate moments of a college girl following complaint with police by the victim.

July 5: Even a stand-up comedian was not spared to commit such crime. He had allegedly posted few obscene photographs clicked with his girlfriend on Facebook after he failed in love. Later, he tendered apology for such act.

July 5: The obscene videos of a girl student of a private university went viral on social media. Three videos with the time duration 2.30 minute and some of her photographs were circulated on the internet. However, neither police received any complaint regarding the matter nor has action taken so far.
