Odisha villagers relieved after leopard leaves for forest

Villagers of Kasba Saraswatipur under Sadar police limits in Odisha’s Baleswar district and its adjoining areas are relieved after a leopard that had strayed into their village today left for the nearby forests this evening.

The leopard was spotted by some villagers near an agricultural field early today morning, Scared by the hue and cry raised by the villagers, it climbed atop a palm tree.

“I saw it here in the fields at distance and shouted that a tiger is there. The villagers joined me in shouting following which it climbed on the palm tree,” said a villager of Kasba Saraswatipur.

As news spread about the incident, people in large numbers from nearby areas gathered at the spot to watch the spectacle which left the animal further scared.

On being informed, Forest department officials from Chandipur arrived at the spot and asked people to disperse from the spot. As the people refused to pay heed, the scared big cat did not descend from the tree top.

A team requisitioned from the  Simlipal Tiger Reserv has begun operations to rescue the leopard from atop the palm tree.

However, with the approach of evening, the leopard came down from atop the palm tree and was on its way to the forests  at the time of filing of this report.

DFO Kuldiha Wild Life range Subhendu Bhuyan confiremd that the leopard had descended from the palm tree on its own on approach of evening and. “It is headed for the forest and department officials are on guard to see to it that it doesn’t cause any harm to the public. It has left and people need not panic,” he said
