Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government today signed an Expression of Intent with International Associations of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and Athletics Federation of India (AFI) for the establishment of a High-Performance Academy at Kalinga Stadium.
The Expression of Intent was inked by Vishal Kumar Dev, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Sports & Youth Services Department on behalf of the state government, Adille Sumariwala, President AFI and Lord Sebastian Coe, President, IAAF at the state secretariat here in presence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
To be called as ‘Odisha-AFI-IAAF High Performance Academy’, it will have professional environment and approach to athletics/track & field events to provide excellent coaching and integrated support services, education and great experience for the athletes.
The Academy will create an environment in which youth/junior potential elite athletes can grow. It will help shape their careers by building them into best athletes and champion performers in an extremely focused and professional atmosphere.
Sports and Youth Services Department will contribute to and be responsible for funding and making available necessary infrastructure and support services including the Academy’s office, and outdoor stadium, a strength training gymnasium, medicine and physiotherapy facilities and specialists, hostel facility, cafeteria etc for athletes and coaches.
Similarly, IAAF will contribute specialists; assist in educating elite coaches, supporting specialists as sprints coach, horizontal jumps coach, decathlon coach, sports medicine and strength training.
On the other hand, AFI will contribute in selecting an appropriate process for the Head of the Academy, apart from selecting all the Indian coaches, administrative staff, education teachers and specialist staff.
Besides, it will provide assistance in the management of the Academy and liaise with IAAF in all matters concerning the Academy
In addition to that, it will be in joint management of the athletes at the Academy along with Government of Odisha.
