Bhubaneswar: Odisha cabinet cleared a proposal for setting up state’s first public health university in the capital city.
The government finally gave its nod to the proposal, which was pending for the long time. A bill in this regard is likely to be presented by the Health & Family Welfare department at the House during this winter session of Assembly.
The proposal was cleared by the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here on Wednesday. As the Assembly is currently in session, the media was not informed about the cabinet decision.
As per the sources, the cabinet meeting was held only for 3-4 minutes where total three proposals including the public health university was approved yesterday.
Sources said that the Asian Institute of Public Health (AIPH) will set up the varsity on PPP mode in Bhubaneswar.
Earlier, a MoU was inked between the government and AIPH in April 2013 to establish Public Health University. Aiming more research and creating experts in field of public health, the government had identified land under Jatni Tehsil for the proposed varsity.
Sources said that there will be no hospital and medical college tied up with the proposed public health university.
Although, the government wanted to make the varsity functional within two-three years after signing the agreement with the AIPH, the proposal remained under red tape.
However, the government approved the proposal paving a way to set up the university.
