Cuttack, May 31:
The Commissionerate Police and the City Transport Committee launched the extended prepaid auto-rickshaw service at the Badambadi bus stand in Odisha’s Cuttack city here on Friday.
“The service would be extended to some other places in the city like the SCB Medical College and Hospital and the Sishu Bhawan (Paediatric Hospital) in a phased manner after getting feedback on the resumption of services in these areas”, said police commissioner Dr RP Sharma while inaugurating the extended service.
The prepaid auto service at the bus terminus would be available from 10.30 pm in the night to 6 AM next morning.
Initially, 25 three-wheelers have been selected to provide the service.
While the commissionerate police have given preference to the owners who drive their own vehicles, the auto drivers, having no criminal backgrounds or addiction to intoxicants, have been provided with the identity cards.
At least 25 routes with over a hundred destinations have been identified for this service from the bus terminus with fixed fare ranging from Rs 30 to Rs 120.
The auto-rickshaws would ply to distances up to the National Law University at Naraj, Jagatpur, Khairapolo, Bhadimul and Kanheipur.
Passengers willing to avail the service, will have to deposit the fare amount to the traffic police posted at Badambadi and get a receipt /permit slip to avail the auto-rickshaw service.
The auto drivers would later collect the hire charges from the traffic police, Sharma said, adding that the facility would significantly bring down criminal activities as the auto-rickshaw drivers would be under the scanner of the traffic police during their duty.
