Natagarh: Dreaded criminal Chagala Mallick was killed in an encounter with police at Nabaghanpur village under Sadar police limits in Odisha’s Nayagarh district late last night.
The criminal sustained bullet injuries on his both legs during the encounter and was admitted to the Nayagarh district headquarters hospital. It was later decided to shift him to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the medical, reports said.
According to police sources, a team of police, acting on a tip-off about execution of a crime by Chagala and two of his associates, reached the spot. Realising the presence of the cops, the criminals opened fire at the policemen. In retaliation by the cops, Chagala was hit by two bullets on both of his legs while his two aides managed to flee the spot. A pistol and many live bullets were seized from his possession.
Chagala, hailing from Raniola village under Niali police limits in Cuttack district, was a close associate of gangster Tito, who was recently arrested. More than 50 criminal cases including those of murder, extortion, bombing and robbery were pending against the deceased, police sources said.
