Odisha’s one time top Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda was today admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here after his health condition deteriorated following his fast since past one week in the Circle Jail here.
On his third hunger strike in less than four months, Sabyasachi Panda has been demanding he be apprised of the number of cases pending against him and produced regularly before the court during hearing, besides speedy trial of his cases.
Panda has been on an indefinite hunger strike from July 15. His condition deteriorated today following which he was rushed to the premier government hospital, jail authorities said.
“After failing to persuade him to take food, we admitted him to hospital as per the advice of the doctor,” Brahmapur Circle Jail Jailor, RN Roul said.
The 47-year-old founder of Odisha Maobadi Party (OMP), however, was steadfast in continuing with the hunger strike despite his failing health condition.
“I will continue to fast until my demands are met,” Panda maintained at the hospital.
“His blood pressure level had dropped. He has been put on intravenous fluids to rehydrate him as he hasn’t taken food since last one week,” a doctor attending on the Red rebel said.
Since his arrest on July 18 last year, Panda has been on hunger strike inside the jail earlier on two occasions— from March 31 to April 4 and from April 24 to May 1.
