Sexagenarian Narahari Swain (64) of Ganjam district in Odisha has created a unique record by cremating an unbelievable 2,056 corpses of family members, of near and dear ones and even completely unknown persons.
Narahari passionately believes that helping cremate the dead is the greatest service that one can do to mankind and has been acting on this belief since the time he was in school.
Narahari was born in Badagada village in Ganjam district. After his parents’ death, he left his village to settle down at Cinema Hall Sahi of Chhatrapur.
Narahari, who joined as a clerk in the Collectorate here in 1972 and retired in 2008, continues with his extraordinary passion till date. The moment he gets news of somebody dying, he rushes to the place within no time and assists in cremating and stays at the cremation site till it’s all over.
Narahari says he has cremated the dead in places as far off as R Udaygiri, Koraput, Puri and Balugaon.
He said he would continue to help cremate bodies doing so as long as his limbs permit him.
