The Odisha government’s Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare department has decided to provide ration cards to members of the third gender community.
For the first time 14,000 members of the third gender community those who had applied for ration cards under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) will be provided with the same.
The Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare department has apprised the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) in this regard.
The state government has informed the OHRC that they have been included under the auto inclusion process.
Rights activist Biswapriya Kanungo had filed a petition with the OHRC citing members of the third gender were not included for issue of ration cards under the NFSA.
Members of the third gender community have expressed their joy over the government’s decision to issue them with ration cards.
