Bhubaneswar, Jul 17:
A 27-year-old woman and her husband were seriously injured after the latter tried to save her from self-immolation attempt following a quarrel between them at Kesura SBI colony under Saheed Nagar police station limits on the outskirts of the Odisha capital today.
According to police, Kalia and his wife Baivabi were staying in a rented house of Chandramani Nayak at Kesura SBI colony since 15 days. Kalia, who runs an art shop in Kalpana area, used to come to the house daily in a drunken state for which his wife had a frequent quarrel with him. Under the influence of liquor, Kalia used to beat her wife.
“A quarrel broke out today between Kalia and Baivabi. Kalia, who was in drunken state, started beating her wife when she resisted his actions and asked him to stop consuming alcohol. Getting harassed on unbearable beatings of her husband in daily fight, Baivabi poured kerosene and set herself on fire,” said IIC of Saheed Nagar police station Deepak Kumar Mishra.
“Soon after the incident, husband Kalia rushed near her and tried to douse the fire. Finally, he succeeded in extinguishing the fire but he was badly injured in the process. The neighbours admitted the couple to the Capital Hospital where the doctors referred them to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack,” the IIC said.
Sources in the Capital Hospital said Baivabi has received 80 per cent burn injuries while Kaila has burn injuries on his face and hand.
