A Vigilance court in Odisha’s Keonjhar district today convicted an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police for seeking illegal gratification from a person to release his vehicle from police station.
Special Vigilance Judge, Keonjhar convicted Daitari Naik and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for three years and pay Rs 20, 000 fine, in default to undergo RI for six months for the offence under section 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
He was further sentenced to undergo RI for two years, pay fine of Rs 10, 000, in default to undergo RI for a period of three months for the offence under section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Substantive sentences are to run concurrently, the court said.
Notably, Daitari Naik, while being posted as ASI at Jhumpura police station in Keonjhar district, sought an illegal gratification of Rs 6, 000 from the complainant Dharanidhar Mohanta to release the latter’s motorcycle which was detained by the accused unauthorizedly in the police station.
On completion of investigation, chargesheeted was filed against Naik and tried in the court of law.
Naik is currently posted as ASI at Raibaga police station in Sundargarh district.
