The mortal remains of veteran Congress leader and former minister and MP from Odisha Sriballav Panigrahi was consigned to the flames at Rajghat in Odisha’s Sambalpur city this morning with full state honours.
The funeral pyre was lit by his eldest son.
Among others, senior district officials and political leaders were present at the funeral ground.
The body of Panigrahi was brought from Bengaluru to Bhubaneswar on Friday morning in a scheduled flight. Later, it was taken to Sri Aurobinda Ashram and then to the Congress Bhawan in Bhubaneswar where several Congress workers and leaders paid their last tribute to the departed soul.
Before leaving for Sambalpur, the body was taken to the office of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC).
Panigrahi had breathed his last at the age of 74 at a private hospital in Bengaluru on the morning on July 9.
Born on September 2, 1940 in a freedom fighter’s family at Bargaon in Sambalpur district, Sriballav was elected as a Member of Odisha Assembly in 1971 and 1974 from Sambalpur Assembly constituency.
He was also elected as the Member of Parliament from Deogarh Lok Sabha constituency in 1984, 1991 and 1996.
