International boxer Mamata Kumari Panda allegedly attempted suicide by jumping into well last evening, hours after her husband committed suicide in southern Odisha town of Brahmapur.
The ace boxer employed as a sub inspector (SI) at Adaba police station was rescued by fire tenders and rushed to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.
The 31-year-old pugilist is currently undergoing treatment at the premier referral hospital and her condition is stated to be critical.
Though the reason behind Mamata’s suicide bid is not yet known, family dispute is suspected to be the reason behind such extreme step.
As per reports, a heartbroken Mamata tried to end her life by jumping in well at around 8 pm after coming to know about her husband’s death who had attempted suicide yesterday afternoon by consuming some poisonous substance.
Mamata’s husband—Nilamani Das– was admitted to MKCG Hospital in a critical condition and he succumbed despite best efforts of the doctors.
Earlier today, Paralakhemundi SDPO visited the hospital and inquired about the condition of Mamata.
