Cuttack: Odisha born Justice Dipak Mishra is likely to be the next Chief Justice of India in Supreme Court.

While the present CJI Justice J.S. Khehar is to be retired on August 27, Justice Mishra’s name has been recommended for the prestigious post.

If the recommendation gets a final nod from the Centre, Justice Mishra will be the third from Odisha to be appointed as the Chief Justice of India after Justice Ranganath Mishra and Justice Gopal Ballav Patnaik.

Justice Dipak Mishra is the nephew of former CJI Justice Ranganath Mishra. He will be second person in the family of Justice Ranganath Mishra to hold the post in India’s apex court.

Born on Oct 3, 1953, Justice Mishra had started his career as the lawyer on Feb 14, 1977. He was appointed as the Additional Judge of Orissa High Court on January 17, 1996. Prior to get appointment in the Supreme Court, Justice Mishra was appointed as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on May 24, 2010. He was appointed as the judge of apex court on Oct 10, 2011.

Justice Mishra was acclaimed for delivering historical verdicts in the cases including Delhi Nirbhaya case and reservation in promotion. He is one of the judges to direct to upload all the data on website within 24 hours of filing FIR.

In his verdict, he had made it clear that the accused can appeal in the court if the FIR will be uploaded on the website.
