Bhubaneswar: The second phase of Odisha Legislative Assembly’s Budget Session began with ruckus by ruling BJD members over Mahanadi issue, resulting in adjournment.
As the House assembled and Question Hour started, several BJD legislators stood near their respective seats and raised slogans while Co-Operation, Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare Minister Surjya Narayan Patro was replying to a question.
Amid pandemonium, Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat initially requested the BJD MLAs to cooperate in the House proceedings and later adjourned it till 3 pm as din prevailed.
Later, the BJD members staged a dharna near the Mahatma Gandhi statue inside Assembly premises holding banners. They accused the Central Government of being biased towards Chhattisgarh in the Mahanadi issue.
“It is the duty of the ruling party to ensure smooth conduct of House proceedings. But, they created ruckus leading to adjournment. May be they are preparing themselves as Opposition members for future,” said Leader of Opposition and Congress MLA Narasingha Mishra speaking to reporters outside the House.
“The Odisha government should first present all necessary facts before the tribunal to get its right. Unfortunately, it hasn’t done so. The BJP is ready for discussion in the House over Mahanadi matter,” said BJP MLA Pradip Purohit outside the House.
“The Centre is not serious about framing terms of reference of the tribunal only to help Chhattisgarh where the BJP is in power and Assembly polls are ahead,” said BJD MLA Sanjay Kumar Das Burma outside the House.
