Bhubaneswar, Mar 16:

Nursing students in spotless white, eager to serve a suffering humanity, lit candles before a portrait of Florence Nightingale and took the customary oath to serve mankind with sincerity, diligence and compassion at the SOA University on Monday.

OathThe lamp lighting celebration also marked the commencement of ‘Rhythm-2015’, the two-day annual function of the Sum Nursing College under the University.

Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare, Employment, Technical Education and Training minister Sanjay Das Burma, who attended as the chief guest, urged the SOA University to prepare an action plan for extending health care for tribal inhabited regions of the state.

“The government is yet to reach many of the tribal inhabited areas with health care. Nurses should also chose to serve such areas,” he said.

Describing SOA University as a front-ranking educational institution of the east, the minister said it had helped many young students realize their dreams. But much more remained to be done, he added.

Sukeerthy Jayakumar, Nursing Superintendent of Apollo Hospitals in the city, who attended as the professional guest on the occasion, urged the students to strive to learn more and upgrade their knowledge. “Try to be the best, kindle the light within you, let your good works shine,” she told the students.

Eminent playback singer Shailabhama Mohapatra attended as the guest of honour.

Vice-Chancellor of SOA University, Prof. (Dr.) Amit Banerjee said the thrust of the university had been to strengthen the faculty. He told the students to be mindful of the huge social responsibility they shouldered and try to be assets for the society.

Prof Pravati Tripathy, Dean of SNC and Associate Dean, Prof Sasmita Das also spoke.
