Bhubaneswar, Aug 8
It certainly is a good time to be a student in Odisha. The School and Mass Education department is mulling over a proposal to cover all students from standard 1 to 10th under accident insurance scheme.
The scheme has been proposed keeping in mind the frequent accidents occurring at several places where school students have become victims.
“The insurance scheme has been proposed to provide immediate financial assistance to the parent of the kid as post-accident compensation. The amount of insurance would vary from Rs 25,000-50,000 based on the extent of the injury,” said a top official of the department.
As many as 66 lakh students of primary, upper primary and high schools would be covered under the insurance scheme. The amount of insurance would be given in multiple instalments.
While the department has already held discussions with a group of government insurance companies, the selection would be done on the basis of the premium charged by these companies.
It has not yet been decided whether the parents of students have to pay a minimum amount to avail of the benefit of the scheme. “We would hold a high level meeting to finalize the scheme and it would be implemented as soon as possible,” the official said.
