Despite a robust and timely century by Tukuna Sahu, Pragati Sporting lost to Saheed Sporting by four wickets today in a crucial quarter final match of the 40-40 Old Monk Club Soda NM Bhuyan Memorial tournament being organized by Mukteswar Cricket Club at the BJB College ground here.
With today’s win Saheed Sporting entered the semifinal round and will take on Rising student on Thursday..
Pragati which elected to bat first got into problems early in the day as the top order crumbled. The team was reeling at one stage with five wickets down for just 60 runs on the board.
It was then that Tukuna Sahu took charge and slammed 106 runs, -the first century of the tournament- to take the score to a respectable 198.The team was all out in the 36th over despite useful knocks from Gouri Shankar Biswal (26) and Abhijeet Barik (22).
Swayam Singhsamant turned out to be the chief destroyer with 5 wickets for just 27 runs in his pocket.The feat earned him the Man of the match award as well.
Manoj Barik who was a tad expensive today got 2 wickets for 63.
In reply, Saheed Sporting batted responsibly and surpassed the Pragati score in the 37th over. Two well-made half centuries- one by the veteran, Rashmi Ranjan Parida (57) and the other by Rakesh Patnaik ( 73) ensured a comfortable victory for the team. Rakesh Gochhayat (24) who remained not out chipped in with a useful knock.
For Pragati, Niranjan Behera claimed two wickets for 36 runs.
MD Falcon Housing Ripul Patnaik gave away the Man of the Match award to Singh Samant at the end of the match.
