Bhubaneswar, Aug 22 :
The National Human Right Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the state Mass Education department on Wednesday and sought a report within four weeks on tragic death of a 7 year old girl student Sony Pradhan, who succumbed to injuries caused when an almirah fell on her inside the classroom of Uttarhana UGME School under Chandanpur police limits in Puri district on July 29 this year.
The NHRC order came in response to a petition filed by well-known human rights activist and lawyer, Prabir Das who through his petition had drawn NHRC’s attention to the case.
After the mishap, Sony Pradhan, a class II student was rushed to the local govt. hospital from where she was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital,Cuttack. She finally succumbed to her grievous injuries on August 2.
Das in his petition has argued that Sony Pradhan was under the care and custody of the state when she was reading in the classroom and the accident could have been averted if the teachers were vigilant. Stating that the tragic death of the girl has caused irreparable loss to her family Das has appealed to the NHRC to direct the Odisha government to pay a minimum compensation of Rs 5 lakh to Sony’s bereaved parents.
