Bhubaneswar, Feb 27:
The National Bridge Construction Corporation (NBCC) will be asked to take up road and bridge construction work in Maoist infested districts of Odisha, where the state government is not able to find private contractors.
Union Minister of Rural Development Chaudhary Birender Singh today gave an assurance to this effect to Odisha Rural Development Minister Badri Narayan Patra during a meeting held in New Delhi.
Singh has also assured Patra to send a specialist team to these districts to study the ground realities, following which a decision would be taken on engagement of other central agencies.
Patra requested Singh to sanction Rs 1600 crores as compensation against the damages caused by Cyclone Phailin to 3000 kilometres of rural roads and bridges, besides releasing the pending dues of the state’s share of PMGSY soon.
It may be noted that Odisha Rural Development Ministry had presented a plan of Rs 1800 crores to the Union ministry. While the Union government had agreed to provide Rs 1178 crores, it has not yet released the entire amount to the state. Patra requested Singh to release the pending Rs 128 crores as soon as possible.
He also urged Singh to include Odisha in PMGSY-2 while informing him that the state is doing proper implementation of the scheme, which is on its last leg in most districts.
Singh has assured Patra to start the pilot project of PMGSY-2 in a district where PMGSY-1 run has been completely over.
