Odisha Maoist Party ( OMP ) leader Sabyasachi Panda alias Sunil had a narrow escape today when the Ganjam police and CRPF jawans raided his forest camp near Badagad on the Ganjam-Kandhamal border, police sources said.
The sources said while the police seized an SLR rifle, some ammunition, rations, nine kit bags and several personal belongings were recovered from the camp.
Sabyasachi Panda and his OMP associates managed to escape during the attack.
The police said the Maoists started firing when the police approached the camp and that at least eight persons, including Sabyasachi Panda, were present in the camp at the time of the raid.
The OMP camp was destroyed, DIG, Southern Range, Amitabh Thakur said.
The combing operation following the raid on the OMP camp failed to trace the members of the outlawed group, the sources said .
