Cuttack, Sep 24:
Police on Tuesday retrieved the body of a 25-year-old woma,n who was missing since last night, from a canal near Haripur Bazar, about 15 km from here.
Police said they fished out the naked body of the woman with multiple injuries in her face and chest and blood stains on her nose and genitals.
“Prima facie, it was a case of rape and murder and circumstantial evidence suggests that more than one perpetrator are involved in this gruesome incident,” Sub- Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) SK Ray said.
Police said father of the woman had lodged a complaint late on Monday evening stating that his daughter, who went to the local market to make some purchases, had gone missing.
Quoting family sources, police said the woman had left her home around 7 PM. When she did not return by 9 PM, the family members launched a manhunt for her.
Failing to trace his daughter, the father informed the police about it around 11 PM following which police made a frantic search in the area and traced the woman’s bicycle lying behind a bush.
Police then traced the garments of the woman floating in the canal water. It was, however, only in the morning that the woman’s body was traced in the canal water.
Family members of the woman allege that it was a case of gang rape and brutal murder and they suspect some locals were involved in it. (PTI)
