The migratory birds have begun returning to their homeland after long stay in Chilika during the migratory season following sudden rise in temperature in Odisha.

According to reports, over 2 lakh migratory have departed towards their homeland from Chilika so far.

Normally, the migratory birds start arriving in Chilika during winter season and return to their countries with their squabs or hatchlings after four-month of stay in the lagoon.

However, with the sudden rise of temperature in the lagoon in February, they have started returning to their homeland early.

“Currently, the temperature is recorded 30 degree Celsius in day time and 20 degree Celsius during night in Chilika. Following sudden change in climate in the area, the migratory birds have begun returning to their homeland”, the bird experts said.

Notably, total 9,47,119 migratory birds belonging to 167 species had flocked the sanctuary during this winter. The wildlife department had spotted 3,74,757 at Nalaban this year, while the number was 3,97,825 last year. Total 8,58,857 birds belonging to 200 species had migrated to Chilika last year.
