Sambalpur: Hardcore Maoist Kunu Dehury, who was carrying a cash reward of Rs 8 lakh on his head, surrendered before police in Odisha’s Sambalpur district today.

Informing about it at a press conference, DGP RP Sharma said Dehury had joined erstwhile Maoist Communist Centre of India (MCC-I) in the year 2002 and got elevated to the rank of Divisional Committee Secretary in CPI (Maoist) organisation in the year 2015.

He was involved in as many as 51 cases (42 in Sambalpur district, 5 in Rourkela and 4 in Deogarh district).

He surrendered before Odisha Police after losing faith in the ideology of CPI (Maoist) organisation and dwindling support base as a result of intensive operations by security forces, a release of the Odisha police said.

Dehury’s case will be examined as per the existing Surrender and Rehabilitation Scheme of the State Government, the release added.
