A man was sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment by a special fast-track court at Phulbani in Odisha’s Kandhamal district on charges of raping a girl after promising to marry her a year ago
While convicting Kailash Bahuka of Nabaguba village on Monday, the additional Sessions and Special Fast Track Court judge A N Maharana also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 for the offence committed by Bahuka in May last year.
The convict will have to undergo additional three-month jail term in case of non-payment of the penalty amount, said additional public prosecutor Pratap Patra.
The 20-year-old victim of Sarang-garh village had lodged a complaint with the Phulbani Sadar police station one day after the occurrence of the incident, accusing Bahuka of raping her at a place on the outskirt of Phulbani town after promising to marry her.
Bahuka, who had gone missing after committing the crime, was later arrested.
Additional public prosecutor Patra said the court gave its verdict on the basis of statements of 15 witnesses and various evidence produced by the prosecution in the case.
