Bhubaneswar, Dec 12:
Twin City Commissionerate police today arrested a fraudster from Athamallik in Odisha’s Angul district for cheating a city-based hotelier a week ago.
The accused approached the complainant claiming that he would change his fortunes as he has attained paranormal powers at Kamakhya Shakti peetha in Assam.
The duped hotelier identified as Samarendra Parija fell into his trap.
“He was dressed as an eunuch. He was dressed in salwar. Initially he told that he had come from Kamakshya Temple and his name was Diana Mishra. He further asked me to search details about him on internet. I didn’t find anything on internet and fell to his evil design,” Samarendra Parija said.
On Sunday (December 4) evening, he checked into the hotel ‘By The Way’ and began his puja on the following day. The hotelier and his wife sat in the puja and had given three gold chains with two lockets. The gold items were kept in a packet.
During puja, the accused deceptively exchanged the packets and asked the couple not to open it till three days.
After the puja was over, the accused was given Rs 6000 as donation and dropped at Bata Bhuasuni Temple in Janla on the outskirts of the capital city.
The couple was taken aback not to find the gold ornaments inside the packet after three days of the puja. Besides, Rs 6000 was also deposited in his account in the meantime as he was demanding him for it.
A complaint was filed with Infocity police station after the duo realised that they have been conned.
“A case was reported at Infocity police station alleging that a person had duped them of gold ornaments in the name of puja for prosperity. After investigation, Soumyaranjan Pradhan from Angul area has been arrested today. We suspect that he was involved in these types of incidents. We are further investigating into the matter,” Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said.
As per reports, the accused was arrested this morning from Athamallik and forwarded to SDJM court in Bhubaneswar.
Three gold chains with two gold lockets, two mobile phones, Rs 6000 cash, voter ID card and Aadhar card were recovered from his possession.
