Sambalpur, Nov 11:
Hundreds of farmers from Odisha and Chhattisgarh under the banner of ‘Paschima Odisha Krushak Sangathan Samanwaya Samiti’ today gathered in Sambalpur to protest against the policies of their governments that prefer water allocation to industries over farmers.
Addressing the gathering, the farmer leaders accused the governments of violating existing norms to facilitate water to industries while depriving the farmers and fishermen of their rights.
“We have been protesting since long. Back in 2006-7, we staged a historic rally that shook up the politics of Odisha. In response, Odisha Government had assured that the water of Hirakud reservoir would be reserved for the farmers. However, they have gone back on their promise and have started facilitating water to industries,” said a farmer leader Lingaraj.
“Same is the case with Chhattisgarh Government that has facilitated water for power plants supposed to produce over 50,000 MW,” he added without getting into the details of these power plants.
