Cuttack:  Tension prevailed in Badapokhari village under Kanheipur Panchayat in Tangi of Cuttack district after a woman of the locality was trampled to death by an elephant this morning.

Sources said the deceased identified as Meena Singh, a tribal, was missing since last night. Locals found her dead body this morning.

Angry over the incident, locals staged a road blockade on Tangi-Kapilas road by burning tyres disrupting vehicular movements. They demanded concrete steps by the forest department to drive away the elephants and compensation to family members of the deceased woman.

“Though a herd of elephants are camping wreaking havoc in the tribal-affiliated villages under Dalijoda forest range for a long while, Dalijoda forest forest officials have failed to drive away the pachyderms,” said a local.

Meanwhile, police reached the protest spot to pacify the angry locals.
