Phulbani, Dec 24:
Kui Samaj Samnawya Samiti (KSSS) has called for a Kandhamal bandh tomorrow following failure of its talks with the district administration over its 34 point charter of demand. The KSSS has been agitating since 2007 demanding fulfillment of its demands.
“In 2007 we had placed 34 demands before the government, the Chief Minister had then promised to fulfill them. Many of them have been fulfilled. Some smaller demands are to be fulfilled at the district administration level but the collector has been not taking much initiative in this regard. The district administration had invited us to discuss but the talks ended in failure. We stick to our bandh call on December 25,” Lambodhar Kanhar, president KSSS said.
“We had called them for discussions on December 22. They had come. We had discussions and have appealed to them to desist from the bandh call. They had some demands, we have informed about that to the government. They have told us that they will consider our appeal. We have made tight security arrangements for Christmas day celebrations,” said Jamini Sarangi collector Kandhamal.
KSSS office bearers said their members would block roads after holding a public meeting tomorrow. Later they resort to picketing in front of shops asking shopkeepers to down their shutters.
With Kandhamal having a sizable Christian population and tomorrow being Christmas, the bandh call by the KSSS is likely to have an impact.
