Rourkela, Feb 8:
Sundargarh police have arrested three persons including the mastermind in the Kuarmunda SBI ATM loot case from Gaya in Bihar.
While they have been brought to Rourkela for further interrogation, police claimed to have seized Rs 3.45 lakh in cash, 23 live cartridges, a Mahindra Xylo SUV and documents pertaining to deposits in banks from their possession.
Police sources said the mastermind Kundan is an engineer who worked for a company engaged in the maintenance business of bank ATMs and had thorough knowledge of decoding passwords.
Kundan and his associates have confessed to have looted over a crore of rupees from different bank ATMs in Odisha.
It may be recalled here that the disappearance of Rs 28 lakhs from the State Bank of India’s ATM at Kuarmunda on January 19 had led to a flutter in Rourkela police district.
Police and ATM experts were at their wits end as to how such a huge amount of cash could vanish without any damage caused to the currency dispensing machine.
Bank authorities on January 18 (Saturday) morning had loaded the ATM with Rs 14,19,300. The next day being Sunday and keeping in mind the requirement of its customers, bank authorities again in the afternoon on the same day loaded another installment of Rs 21,80,000 in the ATM.
The ATM which had functioned in a normal manner till 9.30 pm on Saturday night, customers who came to withdraw money from the ATM on Sunday morning found it to be dark inside the ATM kiosk with none of its buttons functioning.
While a total of Rs 35, 99,300 was loaded into the ATM on Saturday in two instalments and the customers had withdrawn Rs 8,00,600, the remaining Rs 27,98,700 was found stolen from the ATM on the next day on January 18.
