Bhubaneswar, Sep 19:
CEO of Hockey India League (HI) Elena Norman on Wednesday said that the hockey complex in the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar has the required infrastructure facilities to organise international hockey matches.
The CEO visited the stadium with a four-member technical team on Wednesday.
HI director Todd Faulds, one of the members of the team, said; “The stadium needs to have floodlight facility, press box, location of camera and camera towers. The existing dressing rooms for the players are of international standard. But the VIP box and the parking area have to be developed further before international matches can be hosted here”.
“There is plenty of space inside the stadium which can be used as pantry, physio and medical rooms”, he pointed out.
“The city has many good hotels and the more vital thing is that the airport and the venue connectivity are satisfactory. Moreover, the stadium is having a good swimming pool along with gymnasium, which is a necessary infrastructure to host international matches”.
Stating that the ground is extremely beautiful, Todd suggested another practice turf ground to host the Challenger Cup and World Cup tournaments.
Former captain of Indian Hockey team Dilip Tirkey said that the floodlight system and other facilities can be prepared before December as the state government is coordinating along with IDCO.
Stating that the preparation for the practice field had already started, he said; “If all goes well, we will have the field within seven months and the international matches going to be held in November 2014.”
After the enormous success in the inaugural season of HIL, we are expecting more spectacular hockey for the fans during Hero HIL 2014. We hope that the second season will see tough battles among the six teams”.
The second edition of the tournament will be played from January 23 with the final on February 23, 2014.
Vice president of HIL Pratap Satpathy, another member of the team, said “This time, we will have our own team in the league. Our sports lovers would definitely witness league matches in this stadium soon.”
Among others, Vidhar Naik, Television Production unit member Gourav Bhal, VVSN Rao, stadium in-charge Kumar Panda and IDCO officials were present.
