Baripada, Feb 25:
A 60-year-old woman was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants on Monday night in a village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, Forest department sources said here today.
The deceased woman, identified as Rukmini Dhala, was trampled to death by a herd of four elephants that had entered Singada village under Suliapada forest range last night. The woman was killed as she came face to face with the herd, said assistant conservator of forest (ACF) Arun Patra.
The pachyderms later damaged a house before retreating to the nearby forests, he said.
These herds straying into Odisha villages from neighbouring West Bengal through forests on the border frequently damage houses and standing crops, besides occasionally killing humans.
