Leaders of all political parties in Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Debagrah have gone the Sambalpur way and announced their joint decision to boycott urban polls to be held on September 19 in support of the lawyers’ demand for establishment of a permanent bench of the Odisha High Court in Western Odisha.
In two separate all-party meetings in Debagarh and Bargarh on Monday organized by the local bar associations, leaders cutting across party line decided to join the lawyers’ agitation demanding a permanent High Court bench in Western Odisha and refrain from filing nominations for the ensuing civic polls.
At an all party meeting held on Sunday in Jharsuguda, lawyers of Jharsuguda district appealed to all political parties to support their strike call from August 20-27.
District presidents and leaders of different political parties like BJD, BJP, Congress, Samajwadi Party and CPI were present.
BJD leader Sandeep Awasthy said “We extend our support to the lawyers on this demand and would stand by them”.
“It is a long standing demand of the BJP, with consensus of all parties we have decided not to file nominations for the civic body polls” said BJP’s district president Pramod Senapati.
“Congress will support the bar association’s appeal for the benefit of people of Jharsuguda and Western Odisha” said Bhawani Shankar Pati, vice-president Jharsuguda ditrict Congress Committee.
Briefing newsmen, president of Jharsuguda district bar association Dinesh Jain said all major parties agreed to support their demand.
