Bhubaneswar, May 21:

An unrelenting heat wave paralysed normal life Odisha today with the mercury shooting up to over 40 degrees in no less than 16 places in the state.

Heat waveThe local Met office in a release this evening said there is no possibility of any respite from heat wave conditions in the state till May 28.

While Jharsuguda recorded the highest temperature of this year with 45.4 degree Celsius, temperature soared beyond 40 degrees in Chandbali (40.2), Bhubaneswar (41), Angul (42.9), Baripada (40), Sambalpur (44.5), Sundargarh (42.5), Hirakud (44.8), Talcher (42.6), Bhawanipatna (44.5), Bolangir (44.2), Phulbani (40.6), Titlagarh (44.5), Malkangiri (42), Sonepur (43.5) and Dhenkanal (41.2).

“The high temperature and heat wave conditions are due to dry and hot winds from north-west parts of India towards Odisha coast in addition to clear sky conditions here,” said Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, the Director of IMD, Bhubaneswar.

A cyclonic circulation over east-central Bay of Bengal and subsequent formation of low pressure there in 48 hours has favoured the continuation of flow of dry and hot north-westerly winds through the Odisha coast, he pointed out.
