Impostor accused of swindling girls with marriage proposals arrested from Odisha capital

Commissionerate Police today arrested a person who allegedly impersonated himself as the son of a retired IAS officer and a systems engineer with a top software company and trapped girls and their parents with proposals of marriage and swindled money from them on different pretexts.

The person identified as Shiv Ranjan Patnaik hailing from Kodala in Ganjam district was arrested from Aiginia locality under Khandagiri police limits in the capital city. He has allegedly duped his prospective brides of more than Rs 12 lakhs.

Shiv Ranjan lured girls into relationships with proposals for marriage and then as the relationship developed used to use their ATM cards etc. to withdraw money from their bank accounts.

Basing on complaints of two girls, Khandagiri police today arrested Shiv Ranjan, who works in a private college here. Police later forwarded him to court.

“He has allegedly cheated one girl of Rs 5 lakh and another of Rs 7 lakh. We are investigating whether anyone else has been cheated by him and whether anyone else is involved with him in the cheating,” said Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi.
