Koraput, Sept 1
In a bid to curb criminal activities, identity cards have been made mandatory for taking a hotel room on rent in Jeypore town in Maoist-affected Koraput district.

“People from other areas often come to the town, stay in hotels and lodges and commit crimes without leaving behind any trace. We find it very difficult to track them,” said Inspector In-Charge of Jeypore police station Surya Mani Pradhan.

“The new guidelines have been issued to keep a tab on criminal activities in the town. We will ensure that the guidelines are followed,” he added.

On Tuesday, a gang of five robbers from Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district were arrested by Jeypore police for their involvement in around a dozen robberies while a CRPF constable from Berhampur was arrested for decamping with valuables and a car from a hotel at Jeypore.

In the past few weeks, police busted a gambling den and sex racket in a hotel.

Police feel that with the urban polls round the corner, there will be a spurt in criminal activities. “Hotel owners have been asked to immediately inform police if they find any suspicious persons and also verify the mobile numbers of those booking rooms,” said Pradhan.

Hotel owners have welcomed the move. “Though we used to check the ID cards of people booking rooms in our hotel, we were sometimes casual. From now onwards, the guidelines will be strictly followed,” a hotel owner said. (PTI)
