Cuttack, Nov 25:
Hundreds of BJP workers, including its Odisha unit president KV Singhdeo and senior leader Bijoy Mohapatra, were arrested today when they tried to break the police cordon and barge into the office of the RDC (Central) here to submit a memorandum against the mega chit fund scam in the state.
Thousands of BJP workers from Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur districts gathered at Kadam Rasool here today in the forenoon. Led by Singhdeo and Bijoy Mohapatra, they marched in a huge rally to the office of the RDC (Central) and gheraoed it.
While the RDC was not present in his office, several party workers tried to break the cordon and attempted to enter the office to submit the memorandum. They were arrested by the police.
“The Naveen Patnaik government has already throttled democracy by immobilizing the Odisha Assembly. Even outside the Vidhan Sabha, it has turned out to be an escapist,” said Singhdeo addressing the rally.
“We had come here to submit a memorandum to the RDC in a peaceful manner. The RDC is absent in his office and look, they have arrested us”, Singhdeo told television crews while being carried away in a police van after his arrest.
Addressing the rally senior BJP leader Bijoy Mohapatra said; “While the CBI has already reached Naveen Nivas, the shameless state government is saying the CBI’s investigation is politically motivated.”
“The BJP has taken its agitation to the streets from today. Our party will not stop until the depositors get back their money and the robbers are put behind bars,” he added.
He said this was the first occasion in the political history of the state when a sitting chief minister is under the CBI scanner for a scam.
The senior BJP leader called upon the CBI not to spare anyone since it was probing the issue on orders from the Supreme Court and said no one is above law.
Mohapatra said the BJP will gherao offices of district collectors in all the 30 districts.
