Kendrapara, Aug 9
Residents of Kharinasi village where a minor Dalit girl was set afire by two youth in a case of unrequited love have demanded capital punishment for the accused after the girl succumbed to her burn injuries on Friday.
With the whole village under Mahakalpara block in Kendrapara district in mourning, villagers who visited the home of the 14-year-old victim to pay condolences demanded that the rapists be hanged.
“We are moved by the outpouring of grief and emotion by people all over the state after the death of the girl,” Kharinasi GP Sarpanch Sumitra Manna said, adding that a condolence meeting was held in the victim’s memory.
There were reports of roads being blocked in places like Kendrapara, Ramnagar, Mahakalpada and Rajnagar and NH-5 (A) in the district.
The blockades for an hour were symbolic and no untoward incident occurred, Sub Divisional Police Officer, Nrusingha Charan Swain said.
The dalit victim, a student of a government-run school, was set on fire on July 28 after she rejected the advances of one of the accused persons. (PTI)
