Puri, Apr 12:
The death of a 23-year old foreign tourist, whose half-burnt body was recovered by the police from inside a hotel room in Penthakata area on the outskirts of Odisha’s holy city of Puri in the late night hours on Friday, is shrouded in mystery.
Sources said a 23-year old German national Wischnewski Vincent Julian, a native of Rostock city in Germany, during his visit to the pilgrim city, was staying at One Love hotel at Penthakata area since last one week.
On Friday, he had gone to bed after taking his dinner.
In the late night hours, the hotel staff found smoke emanating from Julian’s room but could not enter into the room as it was locked from inside.
Following information, a team from the Sea Beach police station rushed to the spot and broke open the door.
Julian’s body had over 50 percent burn injuries. His bed and mattress were found burnt.
Sources said, the death of the German national could be a pre-planned murder or by sheer accident. Some suspect the fire may have started from the butt of a lighted cigarette. However, the exact cause of the death would be known after the post mortem, police said.
While the police have sealed the room, the body would be taken for post mortem today after an on-the-spot investigation by a scientific team in presence of a local magistrate, reports said.
Prescriptions and medicines found in his room indicated that he had an abdominal operation last year and was often suffering from chronic pain. He used to stay in the room for long hours under medication.
He was regularly consuming sleeping pills and other pain killers, police said.
