Keonjhar, Feb 25:

Keonjhar SP Kavita Jalan today suspended four constables and a havildar who were assigned the job of guarding Deepak Gupta, the main accused in the Uliburu mining scam.

According to reports, the five suspended policemen were assigned with the duty to guard Gupta who was admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment.

However, there were reports last week that Gupta was staying at a hotel in Cuttack though his name was registered in the hospital register as an indoor patient.

Following newspaper reports that the five policemen had facilitated Gupta’s stay in the hotel, the district SP suspended them with immediate effect on grounds of dereliction of duty.

They are, Basant Rout (Havildar), Kamalakanta Dwivedi, Purushottam Das, Bijay Kumar Nayak and Hiteswar Nayak (all constables).

It was reported that Gupta had managed to stay in an air-conditioned hotel room booked in the name of his father.

Following the reports in the media, the hospital authorities had hurriedly discharged Gupta from the Cardiothoracic ward on Sunday last.

Soon after his discharge, the mining scam accused got himself admitted to the orthopedic ward citing pain in his knee joint. However, he was discharged from the ward after reports that he was hand in glove with doctors and SCB authorities appeared in the media.

Deepak is now back in Keonjhar jail.

During investigation, it was found that Deepak was staying in two rooms (212 and 102) booked in the name of his father Champaklal Gupta at hotel Niladri in Mangalabag area.

According to hotel staff, Gupta used to come to the hotel in a Bolero jeep without any policemen escorting him. However, they did not say about his night halt there.

It is interesting to note that the cabin in the cardiothoracic ward where Deepak was admitted, is earmarked for the TB patients.

Talking to OST, Keonjhar jail superintendent Amiya Patnaik said the jail authorities had no special security measures for Gupta.

“I cannot say about the policemen who were entrusted to guard Gupta. The jail authorities had been allowing him to undergo treatment by the order of the court”, Patnaik added.

It may be mentioned that Gupta was arrested on September 4 last year in connection with the Uliburu scam. Four days after his arrest, he was remanded to Keonjhar Jail on September 11.
