A major fire gutted a footwear godown in Odisha’s Sambalpur in the wee hours today destroying goods worth lakhs of rupees.
The fire broke out at a godown in Kumbharapada area here at around midnight.
According to reports, four fire engines – three from Sambalpur and one from Maneswar – were pressed into services to contain the fire. As many as 22 firemen reached the spot at around 3 am and took nearly three hourse to douse the fire.
“We found smoke billowing out of the godown at around 12 am. The local residents were engaged to douse the fire since 1.30 am. The goods have been severely damaged but no one has died in the mishap,” Kamaal Akthar, a local resident said.
The fire officials suspect that the fire might have broken out due to short circuit in the godown. As no one was residing in the warehouse, no loss of life was reported.
“Stocks of chappals were kept in the three-storey godown where the fire tragedy took place. Goods worth around Rs 40 lakh – Rs 50 lakh were destroyed,” an employee of the company said.
Tons of chappals were kept in the godown. Preliminary investigation revealed that no one was staying in the godown. No fire safety measures or extinguishers were put in place in the godown, a fire official said.
