The farmer from Gayelgudi village under Jujumura block in Odisha’s Sambalpur district, who had allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison on Wednesday, succumbed to the attempt today, while undergoing treatment at VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla.
The farmer, Siba Majhi of Gayelgudi village under Jujumura block in Sambalpur district had taken loan from the bank and hand loans as well from individuals for cultivation.
With his crops ruined due to deficient rainfall, Siba was in a depressed state of mind and had allegedly consumed pesticide on Tuesday to end his life.
Siba was rescued and shifted to VIMSAR in Burla in critical condition. Despite best efforts by doctors to save his life, he died, reports said.
Drought assistance packages for affected farmers announced by the state government has failed to rein the scourge of farmer suicide in western Odisha which is the worst affected.
