Keonjhar, Oct 8:
Vigilance officials have arrested the district’s Excise Superintendent Abhay Panjar Sahu for accepting an illegal gratification of Rs 10,000 from ‘mahua’ flower trader Ranjit Sahu in lieu of renewing his licence.
The Excise Superintendent was arrested yesterday after he was caught red-handed by the Vigilance sleuths in his office here. He had demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 from Ranjit to renew his licence for collection of mahua flowers.
Ranjit first gave Rs 30,000 to Abhay for the job, but the latter insisted for another Rs 10,000, after which the trader approached the Vigilance officials. Then a dragnet was laid and the sleuths in plainclothes pounced on Abhay when he was accepting the second installment from Ranjit right in his office.
“I had applied for renewal of my licence six months back. He had demanded for a bribe of Rs 50,000 for the renewal and had threatened to implicate me and my father in false cases and put us behind bars if I don’t comply to his demand,” said Ranjit.
“As I was scared, I took a gold loan and arranged Rs 30,000 which I handed over to him. But he was not satisfied and demanded another Rs 10,000. So, I contacted Vigilance officials and they laid a trap. He was caught red-handed by the officials when he was accepting the money,” he added.
“The Excise Superintendent has been arrested and we have recovered Rs 10,000 from him. He is now in our custody,” said district Vigilance officer H.K. Majhi.
